Google Nexus 7 Features & Drawbacks

The Nexus 7, Google’s first tablet PC, redefines what consumers expect from a budget tablet PC. With a $200 price tag on the base model, Google is clearly looking to take a bite out of the market share enjoyed by the equally priced Amazon Kindle Fire.

Speaking of competition, approximately 5 minutes with the Nexus 7 makes it clear that there is none. People familiar with the Fire’s clunky and lag-prone software may think this isn’t saying much, but the Nexus 7 is also one of the best Android based tablets you can buy of any size or price.

Tablets with comparable specifications, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, are listed on Newegg.com for $249.00, although a newegg promo code or similar discounts can bring that figure down.

Nexus 7: First Impressions

First impressions of the Nexus 7 diverge greatly from those of other tablets in its price range. When you pick it up, it does not evoke the feeling of a budget item. Its build feels sturdy and high-quality.

The bezel on the sides is made of plastic and the back contains a soft rubber finish, making it comfortable to hold. Unlike other devices with a similar rubber finish, the Nexus 7 does not seem to draw and accumulate dust in its crevices.

How Portable is Nexus 7?

Tablets are designed to be held. Of course you can lay it down on a flat surface or buy a kickstand accessory, but a majority of the time you’ll be holding the device in your hands like a book. This makes the weight of tablets an essential consideration.

In this regard, the Nexus 7 does rather well. At 0.75 pound, it isn’t exactly in the class of E ink-based readers, many of which weigh under 8 ounces, but it does make the Nexus 7 among the lightest tablets around.

It is certainly lighter than it’s primary competition: the 0.91-pounds of Kindle Fire, the 0.77 pounds of Toshiba Excite and the 0.76 pounds of Galaxy Tab 2.

Features & Specifications

The 7″ Nexus 7 sports a 1280×800 HD Scratch Resistant screen, with a 1.2 MP front-facing camera. A rear facing camera goes missing in the budget tablet. Like Galaxy Nexus Prime, even Nexus 7 is void of any buttons, the soft buttons are built inside the screen, supported by Jelly Bean.

Nexus 7 Screen

With 1 GB of RAM, 720p HD video Recording, NVidia Tegra 3 Quad Core 1.3 GHz Processor, complete with NFC Android Beam, Google Wallet, Micro USB, 4325 mAH Battery, the Nexus 7 comes with a $25 voucher for Play Store.

Nexus 7 Performance

Google designed the Nexus 7 with special attention to reducing cost without sacrificing performance. With the help of Nvidia’s Kai reference platform, it seems to have accomplished this.

Add to this the amazingly smooth and buttery Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with the power of Google Now, predictive Keyboard and Google Voice Assistant, not to mention the pre-loaded Chrome browser.

In video playback tests, the Nexus 7 lasts an incredible 10 hours – merely a half hour shy of Apple’s iPad and better then all other 7-inch tablets. Amazon’s Kindle Fire by comparison only lasts about 7 hours in similar tests.

The drawback to this phenomenal battery life is a slightly longer charge time, requiring about 3 hours and 50 minutes, compared to the likes of the Galaxy Tab 2’s 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Nexus 7

Shortcomings of Nexus 7

For all it does well, the Nexus 7 does fall short in a few obvious ways. The most problematic of which is the exclusion of a memory expansion slot.

Android devices have always maintained an advantage over Apple products with their ability to expand storage by means of memory cards, so it is particularly perplexing that the Nexus 7 is without this feature.

The $200 base model only has 8GB of memory, making it less than ideal for loading up with large media files like movies and TV shows. For most users, it may make more sense to spend the extra $50 for the 16GB version.

If success is defined by achievement of an objective, then Google has done a fine job in that it blows away other 7-inch tablets. It is well designed, competitively priced and outperforms other devices in its class.

More importantly it extinguishes it’s main competition, the Kindle Fire. However, just around the corner is the Kindle Fire 2.0, and rumors of a 7″ iPad that could put the pressure on the Nexus 7.

Bottom line, dollar for dollar it’s the best 7″ tablet out there right now.

Reasons Why Android Tablets are Just as Useful

When a person looks into the tablet market, they find that there are quite a many options. With these options, you will find that the biggest contenders tend to either be android tablets or the ones produced by Apple.

While some people will only go with items that Apple produces, others are finding that android tablets are continuing to prove that they are effective choices too.

Wide Variety of Android Tablets

You aren’t limited in the buying options for Android. When you buy an Apple product, you are going to find that they are very restrictive.

Unlike the Android which has several markets to pick-up content from, those who have Apple products must go through the App Store from Apple. This means there is no price comparison and only items listed there can be added to your Android tablets.

samsung galaxy tab 2

You have more choices. With an Apple product, you have one manufacturer and very few options to go with it. However, with the android products, you can go with a tablet PC, a phone that offers the android operating system and hundreds of variations.

That means if you prefer a cheap and effective product like the m009s over a higher priced android device, you can pick it up. That means shopping is available to meet your needs.

Price Variety

The second reason why android tablets are useful is that they can be purchased fairly inexpensively. From an android tablet pc to an m009s, you are going to find that these products can be bought for far less than the cost of an iPad.

More importantly, they are able to handle many of the same tasks. This includes streaming video, playing apps and even opening and adjusting documents.

Android Tablets’ Battery

You only need to look at far as the battery. Unlike the iPad, android products tend to have a replaceable battery. That means when your charge starts vanishing, you can switch it out without having to pick up a new item.

For those who are always on the go, this proves to be an important option to have. After all, if you spend most of the day in a car, your recharging options are limited.

Finally, you are going to find that your android tablets can handle any process you need to do on the go. Just connect to a wireless connection and you can send and receive documents, read e-mails and handle your business on the go.

That makes it a great choice for anyone who is looking to have a powerful tool that can keep them up and running on the go.

You Can’t Ignore Microsoft Surface Tablet

Microsoft announced its new tablet on June 18 in a secret event. In an art and film studio, Microsoft invited 200 reporters and members of the media to hear the details of their newest tablet.

While Microsoft usually has an in your face approach when releasing new products, this announcement was a more aloof, mature approach, leading to a higher anticipation of the tablet.

Microsoft Surface Tablet

Dimensions

Chances are consumers won’t be disappointed by the tablet. A 9 mm thick tablet, it weighs only 1.5 pounds and is one of the lightest and sleekest tablets available today. The electrical supply is unique and the tablet runs on low power ARM chips.

Design

The tablet is made of vapour-deposited magnesium and has bevelled edges as well as a built-in kickstand for easy usability.

Making a special effort to focus on the features, the tablet comes with a magnetic locking cover, surpassing the iPad’s protector. Both the built-in kickstand and the cover are obvious ideas, but have not been used in tablets until this year.

Keyboard – The Highlight

The star feature of Surface Tablet is its unique keyboard. When you flip down the magnetic cover & fold out the kickstand, to make Surface Tablet look like a laptop, the accelerometer in cover detects the motion and a keyboard light up!

Surface Tablet Keyboard

The keyboard is pressure sensitive & guess what, it’s complete with a touchpad! When you fold the keyboard back up, it powers down, saving you battery.

Hardware

As with most tablets, users will have several options to personalize their tablet. Included is one HDMI, full-size USB 2.0, and microSD card slot. Users can choose between 32GB or 64GB of storage.

Surface Tablet comes with the NVidia’s Tegra Processor, with a battery of 31.5 Watt-hour.

Operating System

The Operating System is the all-new Windows 8 RT as well as a new, and reportedly improved, version of Netflix. Overall, this tablet may be the newest rival to the iPad.

So far there has been no word on the cost of the tablet, but considering the features, it will probably be similarly priced. The real question is, can Windows break out of their PC shell?

It’s hard to say, but this tablet certainly deserves a second look.

Next Surface Tablet

Microsoft also announced that the next iteration of Surface Tablet will have

  • Intel i5 Processor
  • Full-size USB 3.0 port
  • Microsoft Windows 8 Pro
  • Thicker at 13.55 mm
  • Heavier at 903 g
  • Better 42 Watt-Hour Battery
  • 128 GB of storage

At the tablet announcement, Microsoft president Steven Siniofsky talked about the surface device. Reporters mentioned that he was not a gifted public speaker and his voice and hands trembled during the presentation.

However, even with these setbacks, the demonstration of the tablet and its design captivated the audience.

Panos Panay, manager of Microsoft’s Surface products, also spoke and did an excellent job explaining the engineering feat behind the tablet. He mentioned the 200 custom parts that make up the tablet and spoke with ease about the features of the product.

Panay also mentioned that a key feature of the tablet was that it was made to look and feel like a book. Designed to appeal to eBook readers as well as computer enthusiasts, Microsoft is hoping to expand their customer base with the newest tablet.

This announcement was a great success for Microsoft. With a renewed attention to detail and excellence, Microsoft is hoping to become a larger part of the market and appeal to a larger base of customers.

The Surface Tablet is more like a touch screen Laptop without an optical drive.

Best thing would be the ability to run full softwares like Photoshop, not the crappy touch version of Photoshop.

In an uncharacteristically subdued announcement, they revealed their newest tablet, promising that it would surpass all current tablets.

While its impossible to know how the tablet will be received and if the claims are actually true, this tablet may be the next big thing for Microsoft.

What to Look for When Choosing Your Tablet PC

As with most things, there is no best tablet, just the best tablet for you. Like all devices, what makes the best choice has more to do with how you intend to use it, than about the stats and specs of the device itself.

So before you pick a tablet, make sure to take a minute to consider your goals and plans without even thinking yet about specific models.

Ease-of-use vs. Customizability

sony tablet s

Just like choosing a smartphone, the operating system of your tablet is pretty important. Some run more smoothly while others allow you more flexibility in terms of layout and use.

If you’re an experienced techie and want to be able to do more advanced computing with your tablet, then your choice will be different than if you have never used a touch-screen before and tend to be cautious with technology.

Entertainment vs. Professional Use

This will impact how much memory you want and how high a resolution is important to you. The breakdown is not 100% along the lines of entertainment vs. professional however.

If you will be using the tablet as you travel for work, make sure to consider whether you will want to make businesses presentations on-the-go or if you will just want to have a lot of data handy.

If you will be using the tablet mostly during commutes and long trips, then consider whether you’ll want the memory and resolution for movies or if you’re mostly going to be using your device for books or music or if access to a lot of games is important.

Replace vs. Supplement

Are you purchasing a tablet because you’re phasing out your laptop, or just thinking that having both options would be more convenient sometimes?

apple ipad

If you’re replacing a laptop or desktop then it’s probably worth springing for the most powerful and reliable tablet out there. If however, you are just looking for a way to stay connected or entertained while you’re on-the-move for short periods of time then you can save a lot of money by choosing a simpler device like one of the models that was originally designed as an e-reader.

On-the-Go vs. Staying Put

If you use your tablet while sitting at home or on very modern trains or planes then a shorter battery life may not be a deal breaker. But if you are moving around constantly then you might consider a model with particularly long battery life.

This will also affect what kind of internet connections you want to be able to pick up. Although all will allow you to pick up Wi-Fi, not all tablets allow you to use a 3G connection. The same is true for GPS.

If you have a separate GPS or smartphone that you travel with anyway, then this will not be relevant. But if you plan to use your tablet for all of your travel needs, make sure to check for this.

Transportation& Handling

The beauty of tablets is how portable they are. And while there’s not a particularly wide range of sizes, make sure to take it into account. Although a bigger screen is nice, think about what kind of bag you carry around every day and if this will be something that needs to fit into it.

It may seem like a low-tech consideration but it can make a big difference. However, don’t let it get in the way of finding the tablet that is simply the most comfortable for you.

samsung galaxy tab 2 vs Apple iPad 2

Since this is something that you operate while holding it in your hands, the physical design can make a big difference. Because of this, some tablets are designed with a wedge shape or surface texture that makes them more comfortable to hold.

Others have a keyboard that can be hooked up to the tablet to help out those who do a lot of typing. You may not be able to decide on preferences for these things ahead of time though, especially if you haven’t owned a tablet before.

You may just have to test drive the different options to get a feel for what you like best. Of course, there’s also the budget factor. Depending on your needs, you made be able to save some money.

However, as with any major purchase, set yourself a budget in advance and make sure not to forget your goals for the device when you get a look at the price tags.

Happy Tabbing…!! 🙂
