In-browser Google Maps now with 3D graphics without any plugins

In a recent update to Google Maps, Google added 3D graphics to the map & satellite view. If you have a supported browser, (Chrome 14+ or Firefox 8+) then head over to Google Maps and you should see an invitation to enable MapsGL, adapted from WebGL (Web Graphics Library) to introduce these new features.

The new Map features:

  • 3D buildings in Map view mode and 45° aerial images
  • Smooth transitions between zoom levels and 45° aerial view rotations
  • Swoop effect from the map view to Street View imagery
The update also brings vector maps available in Android to desktop Google Maps which allows you to view sharper 3D images.
